We’ve been making the new version of the app much more intuitive and well organized. Now you should be able to access all of your important data within a couple taps. Knowledge is power, and now you can get a much better overview of your life straight from the home screen.

New tabs

We’ve added a new navigation structure that should be more intuitive and make it faster to access all your stuff.

All of your daily, weekly and monthly reports are in the reports section. Other parts of the app have now been split into new sections—compete with your friends in the new Multiplayer tab and keep track of your new notifications from the Latest feed.

Daily summaries to make sure you reach your goals

Many people have said they love getting the daily summary in the morning. It’s a great way to start your day and see how you’ve been doing.

Now you can follow up in the app, seeing them again or opening the relevant report so you can dig deeper into the data. If the notifications pile up, you can mark them all as read and clear the badge with just one top.

Throughout the day, as your friends share activities or you hit your goals for the day, new notifications will appear in the list for you to review.

Simple Mode

We’re big fans of the 5-card system of organizing your life, and making sure to have a balance between everything. However, that’s not for everyone. Many people wrote in asking how to hide their weight, or that they don’t track their locations and just want to see steps.

We’ve added a new view, now the default, as a simpler view of your data. It includes a sparkline graph for each section, so you can get a better overview of your day. Tapping on it will take you to the more detailed card views, same as previously.

If you have a lot of data, the cards are still the recommended structure. It is easy to switch (one click from the account tab), so try them both and see which one you prefer!

Improved Reporting

The weekly and monthly reports now have their own pages in the reports section. You can see a preview from the main screen before opening them, with a map of what you did. Pro users will be able to easily scroll back to any month in the history as well, making it faster than ever to get to any day in your past.

See the future

Now you can also preview the week and month before the report is finished, to make sure you are on track to reach your goals. If we do our jobs right you should never be surprised by the results at the end, but rather feel in complete control of your life.

This has been available as an option for the weekly report, but now is there for the monthly report as well. September is just starting, so in a few days that preview will become available.

Compete with your friends

The first tab is all about you, but the second one adds useful context and lets you see how you compare to all your friends. The tab shows an average of the past 7 days, so with a few good days you can quickly rise to the top.

Add friends on Gyroscope to start seeing the leaderboard. It doesn’t matter if some people have a Fitbit and others have an Apple Watch or just a phone—everyone can be part of it. If your friends don’t yet have the Gyroscope app, just invite them through the app and they can instantly download the app and join you.

Just don’t add Tatiana as a friend, or you will never be in first place again.

Customizations

One of the main ideas around this release is that everyone has very different data and priorities. We’ve added more customization and flexibility to make sure everyone has a great experience.

For the best experience, you should definitely set up RescueTime and the Moves app, since a lot of the data we rely on comes from there. However, even without just the HealthKit integration there is a lot to see.

Cards vs Simple mode

The biggest setting is whether you want your reports delivered as cards or simple floating stats. You can change from the account tab and it’s really easy to switch to try them both out.

Advanced photo customization

We already analyze the colors of the photo and use that to pick the text color, but sometimes things don’t overlap well.

The next day, I ran into the same issue. The layout worked great 90% of the time, but for this edge case we added a button in the top corner to move the map to the right side instead. Problem solved!

We’re moving all of the run/bike sharing features from our previous app, and this version is better than ever for viewing and sharing your workouts.

Better mapping

We’ve made some big improvements to the map clustering systems, so you should find that where you go is more accurately reflected in the view. If you don’t have the maps yet, you should set up Moves & connect it!

Account settings

There’s a new tab to control everything about your account, including new settings to switch between the classic cards mode & the new simple reports.

Canadian Units

I went to Canada for the first time a couple weeks ago, to meet up with Mahdi. It was a really productive week, and I also learned a lot about the culture.

While there, we met with a few local Gyroscope users in Toronto, and their top request was to support meters & pounds. We had a metric setting for switching to meters & kilometers, but this combination of meters & pounds — used only in Canada — was unsupported by our settings.

This option for meters & pounds is now available in the new app version! Justin Trudeau (if you’re reading this), you’re welcome.

Gyroscope Pro

We’ve made Gyroscope Pro better than ever for this new release! If you like the app, we’d really appreciate if you upgraded.

Full HealthKit Sync

The free app will sync the last couple weeks of data, but Pro users can sync their complete history from the phone. If you’ve had an Apple Watch since they came out, that is potentially millions of heart rate measurements and other data points to keep track of.

Syncing all of these is an intensive process and can take a few minutes, but then your data will be safe in Gyroscope forever even if you switch to a new phone. This is a good idea to do before switching to a brand new phone, or your HealthKit data from the last few years could be lost forever.

Satellite mode

For the map views, tapping the globe icon will switch to a satellite view of the same. Depending on where you are, this can reveal beautiful beaches or interesting cityscapes.

Use your own avatar

The cards have the Gyroscope G in the corner, but with Pro you can tap that to remove the branding and switch it to your own avatar before sharing.

Improved sleep reporting

We’ve improved the reporting of sleep — daily, weekly and monthly. If you’ve been tracking your sleep data, you can now see more details.

If you have a sleep tracker or track your sleep in HealthKit, you’ll be able to see these reports in the app now. If you’re not tracking your sleep yet, we’ve got something big coming for you soon…

The app is now available for free in the App Store! Try it out and let us know what you think. If you like it, we’d really appreciate you leaving a review in the App Store as well.
